Cubs to call up flamethrower Stock for spot start vs. Mets originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

The radar gun will be a sight to behold during Wednesday's Cubs-Mets game.

Manager David Ross announced Tuesday the Cubs will call up hard-throwing right-hander Robert Stock from Triple-A Iowa for a spot start Wednesday.

Stock, whose fastball touches 101 mph, will square off with fellow flamethrower and early NL Cy Young Award favorite Jacob deGrom.

"He's been throwing good," Ross said of Stock. "Starting some games, been attacking hitters, getting after guys, throwing strikes. Obviously he throws hard."

The Cubs claimed Stock, 31, off waivers from the Red Sox this past December. He was in camp this spring as a non-roster invitee before being designated for assignment. They assigned him to Iowa after he cleared waivers.

Stock's first seven appearances with Iowa this season came in relief, including a pair of three-inning outings. He's started his last two appearances, throwing four innings each time.

Stock holds a 4.12 ERA in 19 2/3 innings with Iowa this season, striking out 25 batters compared to just four walks.

"I'm excited to see what he's got to offer," Ross said.

Stock has 52 career big-league appearances under his belt with the Padres (2018-19) and Boston (2020). He made 32 appearances with San Diego in 2018, posting a 2.50 ERA with 38 strikeouts and 13 walks in 39 2/3 innings.

The Cubs rotation shifted after Adbert Alzolay landed on the injured list with a blister last week, joining Trevor Williams (appendicitis). Kohl Stewart made a spot start last Friday and the Cubs optioned him to Iowa Saturday.

Stock isn't on the 40-man roster, so the Cubs will have to make a corresponding move.
