Cubs-Reds game postponed because of rain — and the delay doesn't sit well with Anthony Rizzo

CINCINNATI — The Chicago Cubs’ series finale Thursday night against the Cincinnati Reds was postponed because of rain after a 55-minute delay.

No makeup date was announced. The Cubs return to Cincinnati for a three-game series Aug. 28-30.

Yu Darvish, who was scheduled to pitch Thursday night, played catch minutes before the game was postponed. Darvish will pitch Friday night in the opener of a three-game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Wrigley Field, followed by Tyler Chatwood on Saturday and Jon Lester on Sunday.

Rain started to fall in the Cincinnati area around 11 a.m. and persisted throughout the day. That didn’t sit well with Cubs slugger Anthony Rizzo, who in a tweet expressed his displeasure with the delay during the coronavirus pandemic.

“Player safety? @mlb let’s sit around for 8 plus hours inside the clubhouse.. I’m sure I can find that somewhere in the 113 page safety protocol,” Rizzo wrote.

Several Cubs players came out of the clubhouse to stretch and play catch for about 20 minutes before the game was called.
