Cubs top prospects list offers look at potential future core originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

As talks of potential contract extensions swirl around Kris Bryant, Javy Báez and Anthony Rizzo, it isn't too early to look at who may be part of the next Cubs core.

MLB Pipeline unveiled its list of the Cubs' top 30 prospects for 2021 on Monday, offering a glimpse into the up-and-coming players in the team's farm system. A look at the top 10:

1. LHP Brailyn Marquez

2. OF Brennen Davis

3. C Miguel Amaya

4. SS Cristian Hernandez

5. SS Ed Howard (2020 first-round pick)

6. RHP Kohl Franklin

7. RHP Adbert Alzolay

8. INF Christopher Morel

9. RHP Ryan Jensen (2019 first-round pick)

10. 2B Chase Strumpf

Of those in the top 10, Marquez, Amaya, Alzolay and Morel are on the 40-man roster. However, only Alzolay is in the mix currently for a spot on the Opening Day roster.

Marquez, who made his MLB debut in the 2020 season finale and wields a triple-digit fastball, could make his way to the big leagues at some point this season.

Pipeline projects Davis to make his MLB debut in 2022. The 21-year-old hasn't played above Single-A but spent 2020 at the Cubs' alternate site in South Bend. He's earned praise from manager David Ross and outfielder Ian Happ this spring.

MORE: Why Brennen Davis could be face of next Cubs core

The Cubs signed Hernandez, a top international prospect, in January. The 17-year-old has drawn comparisons to Alex Rodriguez and Manny Machado.

Others on the list include 17-year-old shortstop Reginald Preciado (No. 11), 18-year-old outfielder Owen Caissie (No. 12), 20-year-old shortstop Yeison Santana and 18-year-old outfielder Ismael Mena (No. 25).

The four came over from San Diego this past offseason in the Yu Darvish trade.
