Cubs land 2 prospects on Keith Law's 2021 top 100 list originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago
Pitcher Brailyn Marquez and outfielder Brennen Davis are the Cubs' consensus top prospects, and the latest top 100 list reflects that.
The Athletic's Keith Law revealed his top 100 prospects entering the 2021 season on Thursday, and Marquez (No. 72) and Davis (No. 51) are the lone two Cubs to make the cut.
Interestingly, the duo are inversely ranked on Baseball America's top 100 list, with Marquez checking in at No. 52 and Davis at No. 72.
Davis is the Cubs second-round pick from 2018. The 21-year-old reached low-A South Bend in 2019 but missed time on several occasions due to injury, appearing in 50 games total. He impressed offensively that season, slashing .305/.381/.525 with eight home runs and 30 RBIs.
Davis was part of the Cubs' alternate site roster that trained in South Bend last season.
Marquez made his big league debut in the 2020 regular season finale against the White Sox. Although he showed some butterflies and walked three in 2/3 of an inning, he displayed his high-octane fastball, striking out 2020 AL MVP José Abreu with a 99-mph heater. He also features a plus slider.
Cubs VP of player development Matt Dorey expects Marquez to pitch at Double-A in 2021 but believes he can contribute in the big leagues at some point this coming season.
“He's a guy that I can see impacting the major league roster in ‘21, if he stays on this track that he's been on for the last couple years," Dorey said last month on the Cubs Talk Podcast.
