Cubs make second round of spring camp cuts originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

The Cubs made their second round of spring training cuts on Monday, optioning right-handed pitcher Keegan Thompson to Triple-A and assigning infielder Trent Giambrone to minor league camp.

Thompson, 26, made two appearances this spring, allowing one earned run in 2 2/3 innings. He struck out two batters while walking none.

Thompson spent most of 2019 in Double-A but was injured for a large portion of the season. He was part of the Cubs' player pool in 2020, training at the team's South Bend alternate site. They added him to the 40-man roster this past offseason.

Giambrone, 27, went 1-for-10 in 10 games this spring. He spent all of 2019 in Triple-A.

The Cubs assigned 22 players to minor league camp on Friday, and after Monday's moves, their spring roster stands at 47. They have to reduce it to 26 players by Opening Day.
