Rizzo, Happ pay tribute to Lester with pregame wardrobe originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

Jon Lester returned to Wrigley Field for the first time with the Nationals on Monday, and some of his former teammates made sure to dress for the occasion.

Anthony Rizzo and Ian Happ rocked Lester-esque attire to the ballpark ahead of the lefty's start against the North Siders.

Rizzo went with a Lester Cubs jersey, while Happ went with a cowboy hat, something Lester wore frequently during his Chicago days.

"That's Rizz," Lester said postgame. "He actually texted me [Sunday] night when we were on the plane and said that he was going to do it. I called him on his bluff. I said 'You won't,' and he did."

Lester mentioned Rizzo and Happ in particular over the weekend when discussing Cubs teammates he's kept up with since leaving as a free agent over the winter. The lefty discussed his strong relationship with Rizzo after Monday's game.

"We get to play with guys throughout the years and there's certain ones that stick," Lester said. "We call them baseball friends. Like if I run into somebody that I played with 10 years ago but I hadn't talked to in 10 years, you immediately pick up that relationship and it's like you never left.

"Then you have guys like Rizz that are friends for life. My kids look up to him. They were probably more excited to see him than seeing me [Monday]. It's a unique relationship. Obviously he's meant a lot to this organization. He's meant a lot to me in my career here.

"So for him to do that, Happer doing the same thing with the hat and the flannel shirt, guys that you always keep in contact with and always root for, friends for life, it's pretty cool, pretty special."

Lester obviously means a lot to the Cubs organization, and Rizzo put it in simple, yet strong terms before the game.

"He's a big reason why this franchise turned into a winning franchise," Rizzo said. ... "That reason is because of Jon Lester and how he came and changed the culture."
