Cubs add Shelby Miller to roster, option Adbert Alzolay originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

Welcome to Chicago, Shelby Miller.

The Cubs made a flurry of roster moves prior to Wednesday's game against Milwaukee, including selecting Miller's contract from the alternate site. The club also activated reliever Jason Adam off the COVID-19 related injured list.

In corresponding moves, the club optioned Adbert Alzolay and Brad Wieck to the alt site.

The Cubs also activated catcher Austin Romine off the 10-day IL and designated Tony Wolters for assignment.

Miller, 30, signed a minor league deal with the Cubs in the offseason and impressed this spring, sporting a 1.50 ERA in seven games (two starts). Miller had a contract clause that allowed him to declare his intent to opt-out this past Saturday, and the Cubs had five days to respond.

The move also coincides with the uncertainty around ace Kyle Hendricks, scratched from Tuesday's start due to feeling under the weather.

The Cubs spoke highly of Miller's versatility this spring and what he can bring to the pitching staff. He's a starter by trade but can give multiple innings out of the bullpen.

"He's had a phenomenal spring and really pitched well for us and opened a lot of eyes around here," Cubs manager David Ross said last month. "What we thought he could be is exactly what he's turning into.

"We're really excited about the versatility of Shelby Miller."

Alzolay, 26, made the Opening Day rotation and looked strong in his second start of the season Monday.

Adam, 29, was one of three relievers to hit the COVD-related IL on Monday, along with Dan Winkler and Brandon Workman.

The Cubs added Wieck, along with Pedro Strop and Justin Steele, to the roster Monday in place of those relievers.

The Cubs signed Wolters ahead of Opening Day after placing Romine on the 10-day IL (right knee sprain). Romine missed most of spring training, last playing on March 3, and arrived at the alternate site last week.
