Alzolay nearing return to Cubs with rehab start originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

The next step in Cubs starter Adbert Alzolay's recovery from a hamstring injury is a trip to Des Moines.

Alzolay will make a rehab start with Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday. Cubs manager David Ross said Alzolay will throw two innings.

"We'll assess from there and make sure everything comes out [OK]," Ross said.

If all goes well in the rehab start, Alzolay could be positioned to return as soon as next week against the Twins. He's been on the 10-day injured list since Aug. 14 with a left hamstring strain.

Alzolay threw a bullpen session last Friday and was eligible to come off the IL on Tuesday.

The Cubs' six-man rotation has undergone change since Alzolay went on the IL. The Cubs released Jake Arrieta and called up Keegan Thompson, who joined the rotation last weekend.

Veteran Adrian Sampson made a spot start last week with the Cubs shorthanded in the rotation.
