CU men drop one spot to No. 12 in NAIA tennis poll

Mar. 30—Cumberland's men dropped one spot to No. 12 in the fourth edition of the NAIA top 25 tennis coaches' poll, announced Wednesday by the national office in Kansas City.

The Phoenix started Mid-South Conference play with a perfect record at 4-0 with two league matches left. The Phoenix are 8-8-1 with four losses to teams in the NAIA top 25, one to Sewanee NCAA DIII No. 10, and three to NCAA Division I programs.

Freshman Vitor Ferreira and senior Adrijan Hrzic are ranked inside the top 75 in NAIA singles play. Ferreira earned his second Mid-South Conference Player of the Week honor this season earlier and is ranked at No. 36. Hrzic is ranked at No. 69.

The team also has two doubles sets inside the Top 20 as Hrzic and Dan Slapnik Trost checked in at No. 17 in the latest ITA rankings and Juliana Parada and Ferreira are one spot behind them at No. 18.

The Phoenix are the highest ranked Mid-South Conference team in the poll at No. 12. Lindsey Wilson moved up to No. 13 and the Cumberlands stayed put at No. 22.

The top five remainunchanged as Georgia Gwinnett remains at No. 1. Tennessee Wesleyan holds down the No. 2 spot followed by Kesier at No. 3. Northwestern Ohio checks in at No. 4 and Westcliff at No. 5.

The Phoenix took on RV Lewis-Clark State yesterday with Senior Day festivities held before the match.
