Crucial drop costs Seahawks a chance at unlikely comeback win

Sometimes, the toughest passes to catch are the ones that hit you right in the hands. Not very often, but sometimes.

It was all going so well for Seattle. Down 25-17 to the Los Angeles Chargers but stomping down the field with just seconds on the clock, the Seahawks used a fortuitous pass interference call as time ran out to set up an untimed down and first-and-goal at the 1-yard line. Could Seattle hand the Chargers the most Chargers-esque loss of all?

No, as it turned out. You may know that the Seahawks have a bit of a checkered history right down by the end zone in crucial situations, and once again, Seattle buckled in the clutch. First, guard J.R. Sweezy flinched, pushing the Seahawks back to the 6-yard line. Then, as the Chargers frantically tried to cover everyone while accounting for the possibility of Russell Wilson breaking loose, disaster struck.

Wilson threaded a pass right through half a dozen players and onto the No. 83 of David Moore. But Moore couldn’t hang on, and Seattle’s chances at victory bounced away. (But hey, at least the Seahawks will always have this impressive celebration from earlier in the game.)

Granted, Seattle would have had to score there, then convert the two-point conversion, then win in overtime. But still … you hate to see your chances evaporate on a drop like that. Seattle’s now 4-4 and in a fight for a wild-card spot. A win here would have gone a long way.
