Cowgirls drop pair of games despite playing well

Feb. 2—The Abilene Cowgirls once again played some of their best basketball of the season, only to drop a pair of games to Wamego on Monday night, and the North East Kansas Homeschool on Tuesday night.

On Monday night at Wamego, the Cowgirls stood toe to toe with the number two ranked class 4A Wamego Lady Red Raiders for an entire half. Wamego then proceeded to limit the Abilene offense in the second half, and hold on for the 49-33 victory

Tuesday evening at home the Cowgirls played by far their best basketball of the year against NEK, only to have the game slip away in the second half.

Abilene would lead by sixteen points in the first half, but then struggle with scoring the second half as the Lady Knighthawks recovered, and held on for the 42-33 victory.

Abilene would have their only brief lead of the game at 3-2 when Renatta Heintz would make an opening three pointer. Wamego would out score the Cowgirls the remainder of the opening quarter 10-7 for the 13-10 lead. A Sammy Stout pair of baskets including a three pointer would lead the Abilene scoring early with five points.

The Cowgirls intensity would increase in the second quarter as they out scored Wamego 8-6 and cut the lead to just one point at halftime 18-19. The inside game of Claira Dannefer's three baskets, and Callie Powell accounted for all the Abilene scoring in the quarter.

The third quarter would be the turning point in the game, as the Cowgirls were limited to three total points, in which Dannefer would score them all. A pair of Lady Red Raiders three pointers would help them comfortably push their lead to double digits at 34-21 with one quarter to go.

Wamego would hold on in the final quarter for the 49-33 victory. Dannefer would add her final eight points of the game to lead Abilene with a game high 19 points.

The Abilene Cowgirls let a 16-point first half lead slip away, as the NEK Lady Knighthawks came back and won 42-33 in Abilene Tuesday night.

The Cowgirls would jump out to a quick 8-0 scoring run, and lead 10-2 after the first quarter. Callie Powell would lead the scoring in the quarter with a pair of baskets, along with a Sammy Stout three pointer, and a Renatta Heintz old fashioned three pointer.

The comfortable lead would continue in the second quarter as NEK had no answer for the inside game of Claira Dannefer. Dannefer's five baskets, and a Hannah Walter basket would have Abilene leading 24-8 at the 2:40 mark of the half. An eight point run by the lady Knighthawks would close the half with a Cowgirl lead of nine points at 24-15.

The scoring gap would begin to tighten in the second half as NEK would open with an 8-2 run in the third quarter. Abilene would be limited to six points in the quarter, and lead by just five points at 30-25 with one quarter to go.

A low scoring third quarter of just three total points would ultimately cost the Cowgirls the game in the final quarter. The Lady Knighthawks would out score Abilene 14-3, and take their first lead of the game at the 5:33 mark. They would go on to win the game 42-33.
