Cowboys advance to area tourney after nail-biter with Stuart

Feb. 17—The Cowboys had to fight to stay in the playoffs, and it paid off.

Kiowa faced Stuart in Saturday's regional consolation game of the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association Class B Area II regional playoffs, where the Cowboys defeated the Hornets 44-38.

"I thought we executed well. We went dry a couple of times during the game, but kept our focus and really made some big shots when we needed to," Kiowa coach Keith Quaid said after the game.

It was a slow start for both Kiowa and Stuart. Shots weren't falling for either team until two minutes into the game, where Kiowa's Myer Medders' layup put two points on the board for the Cowboys. Kiowa managed to continue shooting and building points, while Stuart struggled, with only Gabe Clayton's one free throw to end the first quarter 13-1.

Momentum shifted in the second quarter for Stuart, with it finding some rhythm in its shooting game. The Hornets went on a 16-5 run against the Cowboys going into the half, with Kiowa only leading by one.

The second half of the game was a continuous fight between both teams between defending and driving into the paint for points. The Hornets powered to a 38-38 tie in the fourth quarter, but the Cowboys focused on ball movement and patiently waiting for the right moment to put up a shot, sealing away the win.

Cason Church led the Cowboys with 13 points, followed by Noah Foris with 12 points, Eli Foris with eight points, Medders with seven points, and Cooper McClendon and Chandler Kelley each with two points.

Nolan Stewart led the Hornets with 15 points, followed be Dre'Von Colbert with 14 points, Nolan Lindley with four points, Clayton with three points, and Zack Luker with two points.

Up next for Kiowa, they will face the loser between Calumet and McCurtain at 2:30 p.m. Feb. 22 at Henryetta.

STONEWALL 56, QUINTON 43

QUINTON — A tale of two halves had both teams fighting to the finish.

Quinton hosted Stonewall in Saturday's Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association Class A regional consolation final, where the hard-fought battle of the greens ended with Stonewall taking the 56-43 win.

The Longhorns struck first with a shot from the charity stripe, but a Bo Wagnon cleanup bucket and free throws from Bret Bray put Quinton into the lead. The green and white stayed on the attack, using back-to-back triples to go up by six midway through the first quarter.

Rylan Cate later earned a bucket on a backdoor cut, and three-point plays from Bray and Mikey Perez put Quinton up 18-11 heading into the second period.

After a defensive first few minutes in the second, Quinton got moving offensively once more with a Wagnon triple followed by an offensive rebound-and-score from Eli Blankenship. Stonewall rattled off a quick 5-0 run, but Quinton responded in a big way with points from Bray and Johnie Needham to lead 30-23 at the break.

Blankenship drilled a contest trey for Quinton to start the second half, but Stonewall responded with a 16-0 run to take a 41-33 lead after three quarters.

Both teams fought tooth and nail to the final horn, but that third-quarter swing in momentum helped Stonewall hold off Quinton for the win.

Bray led the way with 19 points, followed by Blankenship with nine points, Perez with six points, Wagnon with five points, and Needham and Cate with two points each.
