Tens of thousands of people have signed a petition calling for an end to the ban on supermarkets selling non-essential items during the 17-day “firebreak” lockdown in Wales.

The measure drew anger and confusion online when pictures circulated showing barriers blocking aisles selling items including clothing and electrical goods as the new measures were introduced across Wales last night.

Meanwhile, residents of South Yorkshire may stay under tier 3 coronavirus restrictions for more than 28 days, the county’s health director warned today as the mayor of Sheffield said he will not hesitate to ask for additional government support for the region.

As new restrictions came in around the UK, bishops in northern England warned Boris Johnson that his government’s handling of the pandemic risked deepening the north-south divide.
