We're counting down the Top 10 New York sports stories of 2020, and here's No. 8...

It was never going to be a question of whether or not Derek Jeter was going to get into the Baseball Hall of Fame. The question was whether or not he’d join teammate Mariano Rivera as the only unanimous induction in the history of the sport.

Jeter ended up being one vote short, appearing on 396 of the 397 BBWAA ballots, but it was more than enough to make Jeter a first-ballot Hall of Famer, as he was voted into the hall with longtime Colorado Rockies slugger Larry Walker in January. The 2020 ceremony was postponed due to COVID-19 safety precautions, but Jeter will eventually get to address the crowd in Cooperstown.

Born in New Jersey and going on to play high school ball in Kalamazoo, Mich., Jeter was drafted sixth overall by the Yankees in 1992, in a move that would spur the Yankees forward into their latest stretch of greatness.

The Captain earned 14 All-Star nods, won five Gold Gloves and five Silver Sluggers, but above all else, Jeter was a winner, leading the Yankees to five World Series titles between 1996 and 2009.

Soft-spoken and stoic in the locker room after his games, Jeter let his play do the talking, as he etched himself among the greatest Yankees to ever wear the pinstripes, racking up 3,465 career hits with 260 homers, 1,311 RBI and 1,923 runs scored.

And he did it all in a Yankees’ uniform, playing all 20 seasons with the Bombers.
