Could Giants part ways with Jason Garrett after 2020 season?

New York Giants head coach Joe Judge fired offensive line coach Marc Colombo last week after the two had an extremely heated exchange that made national headlines.

Colombo, a Jason Garrett guy, unloaded on Judge numerous times in recent weeks but last Tuesday’s meltdown was the final straw. However, it may not be the only domino to fall.

Judge was clearly displeased with the play of his offensive line and can’t be overly thrilled with the offense as a whole. So might Colombo be just the first in a series of potential changes?

Rumors have run rampant in recent days with Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports speculating that Garrett could also be out at season’s end.

Sources said there has been friction and turmoil within other aspects of that staff as well, with offensive coordinator Jason Garrett under scrutiny and a change at that key staff position a very real possibility in 2021.

Nothing involving Garrett is set in stone and the same can be said for the entire first-year staff. Discussions and decisions will be made following Week 17, unless the Giants make the playoffs, and only then will potential changes be made.

But even if Judge decides he’d like Garrett to stay, there’s no guarantee the 54-year-old won’t take off should a head coaching opportunity present itself.

Garrett’s presence in East Rutherford seemed a bit flimsy from the start. He was brought in on the suggestion of co-owner John Mara and had no real connections to Judge prior to this season. And Judge’s decision to fire Garrett’s guy may make things a bit more tense.

Or maybe it’s much ado about nothing.

Ultimately, how the Giants offense fares over the final six games and how second-year quarterback Daniel Jones performs will decide Garrett’s immediate fate. If all goes well, the next step is determining whether or not there’s a head coaching market for Garrett.

There are a lot of moving pieces here and nothing is going to be settled or determined for at least another month and a half.
