Could 2024 be Kirk Cousins’ last season in Minnesota?

In a recent article, PFF looked at some of the more notable names going into a contract year in the 2023 season. One Minnesota Viking made the list, and it no shock who it is. Quarterback Kirk Cousins is going into a pivotal year when it comes to both his future and the future of the organization.

2024 seems to be when it would make the most sense to come off the Cousins contract. It is the only year trading/cutting Cousins results in cap savings for the organization. A post-June 1st trade/cut would result in savings of $10 million, with a dead-cap hit of $10.25 million according to OverTheCap.com.

The quarterback position will be one of the more pivotal components of this “competitive rebuild.” While quarterbacks are playing closer and closer to the age of 40, I don’t know if Cousins will be one of them. Seeing quarterbacks like Matt Ryan and Philip Rivers, who won in similar ways that Cousins does, fall off a cliff so quickly as they age makes me anxious. It’s something to watch as the front office builds this team into a competitor.
