Cougs nipped by Jeeps, 28-27

Feb. 14—ELNORA — North Daviess let Northeast Dubois slide into the lead during a frenetic fourth quarter, and when the proverbial dust settled, the Jeeps pulled out a 28-27 win against the hosts.

The offense from both sides stalled out through three quarters as the Cougars led 5-4, 11-7, and 14-11 respectively after three periods of action. Twice during the fourth stanza ND pulled in front by five points; however, the Jeeps revved up with three trifectas of their own to move in front 25-21.

The final minute was chaotic for both squads as several missed free throws, a number of offensive rebounds, numerous fouls, and plenty of time-outs came down to the last four seconds. Senior guard Travis Raber was fouled on the game-winning shot opportunity but missed both charity tosses with no time on the clock as Northeast Dubois (11-9) ended a four-game losing streak to the Cougs.

Scoring was balanced for ND — Aaron Marner eight, Collin Lengacher seven, Landon Swartzentruber six, Raber four, and Max Toy two points. North Daviess knocked down just 4 of 12 free throws on the evening. For the Jeeps, Grant Goller tallied nine of his game-high 11 after halftime while Tryp Verkamp came off the bench and hit a couple of timely fourth stanza three-pointers for a half-dozen.

The reserve contest was also won by the Jeeps 39-30.

North Daviess (13-8) hosts White River Valley on Senior Night this Friday evening at the Cougar Den.
