Cougs capture double weekend wins

Jan. 7—OAKLAND CITY — North Daviess improved its varsity record to 10-3, as the Cougars won a couple of close contests this past weekend.

On Friday night, ND came from behind late in the fourth quarter to defeat Eastern Greene 39-38 in a SWIAC match-up. Then, on Saturday evening, the Cougs bettered Borden 38-33 in a game played at Oakland City University's Johnson Center.

Against Eastern, North Daviess trailed by as many as 10 points after falling behind 31-21 with 2:37 remaining. From that point, however, ND did not miss a shot as sophomore Aaron Marner delivered a trio of long three-pointers along with an old-fashioned three point play. His teammate, junior Wyatt Bishop, also hit a three-ball in the last minute, but it was his second timely trifecta with :12.8 seconds to go that proved to be the game-winner. Marner tallied 12 of his game-high 20 points in the final stanza. The Cougars also claimed the reserve affair by the final score of 45-14.

North Daviess started very slowly again on Saturday at OCU as Borden raced out to a 10-0 advantage in the opening three minutes of action. The Braves quickly cooled off and led just 16-11 at intermission, but ND rallied to a 22-18 lead with Aaron Marner, Collin Lengacher, and Travis Raber all draining treys. Borden recovered with a 6-0 spurt to close the third period.

In the fourth stanza, North Daviess went back in front and gradually pulled away as Borden would drop to 9-4 overall. Scoring was balanced with Marner's 11 leading the way; Landon Swartzentruber managed 10, Raber nine, and Lengacher eight.

The win was the 350th for coach Brent Dalrymple in 24 years at North Daviess.

The Cougs will entertain Shakamak on Friday night from the Den for Homecoming with a 6 p.m. JV tip.
