Cougars target Arrows, 43-35

Feb. 22—ELNORA — The North Daviess Cougars got a taste of sectional-type of competition on Thursday — and it seemed pretty appetizing, as they finished of the regular season at 15-8.

The Cougars defeated 18-win Sullivan, 43-35 with a fourth quarter surge that featured 14-16 from the free throw line and kept Sullivan from scoring for several minutes of the final frame.

ND got 15 points from Colin Lengacher and 10 from Landon Swartzentruber to lead the offense, but Max Toy also added eight points in the second half, five from Travis Raber and five combined from Luke and Aaron Marner to cap off a successful season.

"Our goal was to play well tonight. I wasn't as concerned about getting the win, I just wanted us to compete and get ready for sectional. I think our defense took a lot away from Sullivan tonight and we did a great job with our free throw shooting," said coach Brent Dalrymple.

"We are playing our best right now. It took a while to get here, but I really like where this team is. I'm just so proud of these seniors and this team."

Lengacher gave ND a 2-0 lead, but Sullivan responded to tie it. However it would be nearly four minutes before anyone would find the bottom of the net again. Landon Swartzentruber added a triple from the right side to make it 5-2. Lengacher would connect for two more points and add a 3-ball right before the buzzer to go up 10-6 at the end of the quarter.

Sullivan tied it at 10-all, but Lengacher continued with his hot hand and added his second 3-ball at 5:45 of the second. Sullivan recaptured the lead with a basket from Aiden McCammon, but again Lengacher would respond with a deep ball.

Swartzentruber would add one more basket and ND would go into the half with an 18-16 margin, with Lengacher and Swartzentruber handling all of the ND scoring.

The Arrows opened with the first five points of the third to take the lead back, 21-18. Toy added a basket to tie it at 21-all with 4:00 left in the quarter. Toy added a second basket but Sullivan answered with a triple, before Swartzentruber had a basket at the horn to make it 25-27.

Toy opened the fourth with a pair of free throws to tie it at 27-all. Travis Raber also made 4-4 from the charity stripe to give ND the lead 31-27. Aaron Marner also drained a pair of free throws, as Sullivan remained scoreless during the quarter, with under 2:30 left to play. ND went on a 11-0 run before McCammon finally connected to cut it back to 30-36. Toy and Lengacher combined for the next four as ND cruised to the 43-35 win.

Sullivan was led by McCammon with 15 points.

The JV Cougars (11-10) rallied back from a fourth quarter double-digit deficit in the JV game, but ended up falling 46-42. Cole Boyd led ND with 12. The Cougars play on Tuesday in the Princeton Sectional against Southridge. It will be the only game played on Tuesday at that sectional.
