Cougars end regular season with win over Panthers

Feb. 27—South Decatur's boys basketball team closed out the regular season on a high note with a 58-46 victory over visiting Knightstown Friday.

South Decatur wraps up the regular season at 10-13 overall. The Panthers fall to 11-11.

The Cougars jumped out to a 16-6 lead after the first quarter. Jacob Scruggs led the Cougars with eight points. Jaylynn McMurray and Taylen Absher both connected from long distance for three points each. Alex Myers had the other bucket for South. Knightstown's Brantt Ellis, Michael Roberson and Palmer Newkirk all scored two points.

Knightstown turned things around in the second quarter, outscoring the Cougars 11-6 to trail 22-17 at the half. Drake Scaggs scored four points in the quarter for South and Scruggs added two. Knightstown got six points from Roberson, a 3-pointer from Brayden McDaniel and two free throws from Newkirk.

Both teams scored 16 points in the third quarter as the Cougars held on to the 5-point lead heading to the fourth quarter. Roberson scored seven points to lead the Panthers. Scruggs poured in 11 points. Myers chipped in with three points and Scaggs scored two.

South put the game away in the fourth quarter with a 20-13 run, sealing the 58-46 victory. The Cougars hit 9-of-11 free throws in the final frame.

The Cougars were led by Scruggs with 27 points. Scaggs scored eight points. Myers had seven points. McMurray hit a third-quarter 3-pointer to go with the one earlier in the game for six points. Jamison Keller scored all five of his points in the fourth quarter. Absher scored five points.

Knightstown was led by Roberson with 24 points and Newkirk with 11 points.

South travels to Edinburgh to face the Lancers in sectional action Wednesday. The Cougars and Lancers play the second game at approximately 7:30 p.m.
