Corbin Tourism Commission to welcome All 'A' Classic State Basketball Tournament

Jan. 11—CORBIN — At Tuesday's regular meeting, the Corbin Tourism and Convention Commission announced that the city will be hosting the All "A" Classic State Basketball Tournament.

The tournament will take place at the Corbin Arena from Wednesday, January 24 through Sunday, January 28.

The tournament is typically hosted in Richmond, where its economic impact is estimated at well over $1 million, according to published reports.

A move became necessary, however, after Eastern Kentucky University announced that its Alumni Coliseum would undergo renovations beginning at the close of the 2023 basketball season.

Corbin Tourism Director Maggy Monhollen noted that there will be 32 teams participating in the tournament. Additionally, 12 hotels — and approximately 400 rooms — have already been booked along I-75 from Exit 41 to 25.

Monhollen and the Tourism Commission expect the tournament to bring in a tremendous amount of money to the Corbin area.

The tournament will be the largest tournament has ever hosted out of the Corbin Arena.

In other news, the Tourism commission received a clean audit for the fiscal year 2023.

Tom Campbell, who is an auditor for Cloyd & Associates, was there at the meeting to discuss the results of the audit.

Campbell explained to the commission that no irregularities were found in the audit and that the Corbin Tourism Commission was in good financial standing.

Moreover, the Tourism Commission approved the procurement of fireworks for their July 3rd fireworks show this year.

The total cost of both acquiring the fireworks and paying professionals to shoot them will be $20,000.
