Christian McCaffrey was a one-man wrecking crew and one-man league-winner in 2019, putting together a fantasy season for the ages. The question is, can he come close to repeating it, considering top-overall running back finishers rarely repeat in fantasy? Or will someone else topple him from the top?
The NBA has determined that two incidents during Game 2 of the Lakers' series against the Rockets deserve further discipline. One was committed by Anthony Davis, and the other was committed against him. Scott Zolak had better keep his arm warm. New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick may need an emergency quarterback. Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the NFL has allowed teams to place veterans on the practice squad, which were spots originally reserved for younger players.
Last month at the PGA Championship, Brooks Koepka used a post-round interview to seemingly take a shot at Dustin Johnson, a golfer he once considered a close friend. Koepka, who was in the hunt for the lead at the time — the tournament was eventually won by Collin Morikawa — remarked that there were a lot of names ahead of him on the leaderboard, but implied that he didn't fear many of them. Koepka has won four majors — the PGA Championship twice, and the U.S. Open twice.

For the second time since 2011, ESPN is reportedly removing Hank Williams Jr. from its “Monday Night Football” intro. This time, the network claims it's not about Williams' controversial points of view, according to Sports Business Journal. Instead of Williams' iconic “All My Rowdy Friends Are Here on Monday Night” that became the anthem for weekday football in 1989, ESPN will air a rendition of Little Richard's “Rip It Up,” mashing the late artist's vocals with instrumentation from Virginia-based band Butcher Brown, per the report.

When Steve Nash was hired as the Nets' new head coach, one of the main connections made immediately was the one he had with Kevin Durant. During his time as a consultant with the Golden State Warriors, Nash and Durant developed a very close relationship. Nash was an 18-yer veteran with multiple MVPs and All-Star appearances while Durant had an MVP himself with the Oklahoma City Thunder and collected an NBA title during his time with the Warriors as well.
Chris Paul or Deron Williams? Marvin Williams drew occasional mention. As in: How the heck did the Hawks – who needed a point guard – pick Marvin Williams No. 2 over Deron Williams (who went No. 3 to the Jazz) and Chris Paul (who went No. 4 to the Hornets)?
The Rockets keep getting hit in the nuts. The NBA has now mostly taken notice. Houston guard Ben McLemore took the first hit from Thunder star Chris Paul: Dave McMenamin and Tim MacMahon of ESPN: Sources told ESPN that the Rockets were upset that Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Chris Paul's jab to Ben McLemore's groin area in overtime of Game 3 of their first round series — a play extremely similar to Davis' drive — was not reviewed by the league office.
Getting released three years after going fourth overall in the draft generally isn't seen as a good thing, but Leonard Fournette doesn't seem to be looking at his departure from Jacksonville that way. Fournette was released by the Jaguars last week and didn't have to wait long before landing a contract to join the Buccaneers. Neither Fournette's LSU teammates nor current or past Jaguars quarterbacks Blake Bortles, Cody Kessler and Gardner Minshew will likely be thrilled by that assessment, but it's hard to argue with Fournette's view of the upgrade in his quarterback situation.
The NFL season is less than 48 hours from kicking off and the Eagles are less than four days from traveling to the Nations Capital to face the young and upstart Washington Football Team. The season hasn't officially started until a team releases a depth chart and on Tuesday, the Birds unofficial depth chart was released. As was expected, Nate Sudfeld will get the nod as the Eagles backup quarterback ahead of the rookie, Jalen Hurts.
Fourth seed Naomi Osaka overcame unseeded Shelby Rogers in straight sets to reach the US Open semi-finals on Tuesday and declared it "revenge" for earlier defeats. Osaka, 22, will play 28th-seeded American Jennifer Brady on Thursday for a place in the final. Despite going into the last-eight match as favorite, the world number 9 Osaka said she was apprehensive about playing the 93rd-ranked Rogers because she had failed to beat her in three previous outings.
The success of the 49ers' offseason can't be fully measured until they have some kind of on-field results. Keeping relatively strong continuity while swiftly filling their biggest holes is a key reason they stayed in the top 5 of the USA TODAY Week 1 power rankings. Jimmy Garoppolo had a strong year in his first full season as a starter.
A late roster move got outfielder Luis Basabe on the roster and sent utility man Daniel Robertson back to the alternate site in Sacramento. It's a bit of a surprise on the surface, but not when you look more closely at the outfield picture. If you count Mauricio Dubon as a center fielder and Darin Ruf as a left fielder, the Giants previously had five outfielders on the roster, but with Dickerson now a bit banged up and Austin Slater still dealing with an elbow strain that has kept him from playing the outfield since August 11.
Free Press special writer Bill Dow continues his "where are they now" series about former Detroit Tigers players, coaches and managers. Elected as the eighth MLB commissioner on Sept. 1, 1989, the attorney and Yale Law School graduate succeeded his close friend, Bart Giamatti, who died just five months into his term. As Giamatti's deputy, the first in baseball history, Vincent played a pivotal role in the investigation of gambling allegations against Pete Rose, baseball's all-time hits leader who agreed to a lifetime ban from the game.
