Commanders-Cowboys inactives: Howell to make first NFL start originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington
LANDOVER, Md. -- Washington Commanders rookie quarterback Sam Howell will make his first career start on Sunday, providing some juice for the home side against the Dallas Cowboys just one week after Washington's postseason hopes were tanked.
As Howell gets ready for his first NFL action, several of his teammates will be sidelined for Sunday's regular-season finale.
For starters, the Commanders will be without its top two running backs, Brian Robinson Jr. and Antonio Gibson, due to injury. Robinson is out with a knee injury, while Gibson was moved to IR earlier this week after undergoing foot surgery.
Along the offensive line, starting right tackle Cornelius Lucas is out with an ankle injury; reserve guard Saahdiq Charles is out with a concussion. Left guard Andrew Norwell, who was questionable entering Week 18 with a hip ailment, is out as well. Rookie guard Chris Paul will get his first NFL action on Sunday.
Defensively, Washington will be without Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, who left last week's game against Cleveland early with a knee injury. Head coach Ron Rivera said that if the Commanders were fighting for playoff contention, Allen would have been a true game-time decision.
The Commanders will also be without starting safety Kam Curl for a third straight week due to an ankle injury. Linebacker Jamin Davis (knee), defensive end James Smith-Williams (concussion) and cornerback Benjamin St-Juste (ankle) were all ruled out for Sunday's contest, too.
