Virtual talk about racism offered to elementary students

MILTON – Elementary-aged students are invited to join a virtual talk on structural racism with Dr. Kimberly Cauley-Narain at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20. Cauley-Narain is the author of a children’s book titled "United States: Cycle of a Dream – A Kid’s’ Introduction to Structural Racism." Cauley-Narain will share her story and answer questions about what she has learned along the way. The presentation will be held on Zoom via meeting ID 98541462186.

'Stewardship Saturday' to be held at World's End

HINGHAM – The Boston Harbor Islands and The Trustees of Reservations will host "Stewardship Saturday" starting at 9 a.m. Jan. 22 at World's End, Martin Lane, Hingham. Attendees will explore the local flora and fauna and discuss the ecology, natural history and cultural significance of landscapes in the park while improving the local habitat. Free. Milton library to screen 'Memoir of a Black Girl'

MILTON – The community group Courageous Conversations Towards Racial Justice Milton-Mattapan will welcome screenwriter and filmmaker Thato Mwosa to view and discuss her film, "Memoir of a Black Girl," at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at the Milton Public Library. The film won the 2021 Best Feature Film award at the Roxbury International Film Festival and is a coming-of-age story of a Black high school student confronting the challenges of race, urban education and social/racial tensions that bring impact. The film will be shown, followed by a discussion with the filmmaker and actors. The event will be both in person at the library and on Zoom. Historical society to host talk by meteorologist

HINGHAM – The Hingham Historical Society will present "Witnesses to Extreme Weather: Memories and Science from Storms That Have Touched Us" featuring meteorologist Michael Page from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30. Diary entries, photos, excerpts from the journals of longtime National Weather Service observer Bob Skilling, and more from the society's archives will provide context. Tickets are $30. VFW invites entries from kids to national anthem singing contest

MARSHFIELD – Youngsters are encouraged to submit an entry into the annual national anthem singing video contest "Get Excited for the Red, White and Blue!" by March 31. Students in kindergarten through grade 12 from the South Shore and beyond are allowed to enter, and the Marshfield Daniel Webster VFW Auxiliary Post 8345 will accept local entries.
