Colts say Andrew Luck won't practice this week after soreness, cortisone shot

If you were hoping to see Andrew Luck back under center for the Indianapolis Colts this week as they host the Jacksonville Jaguars, we have some bad news for you.

Not only will Luck not be making his return to game play this week, Colts general manager Chris Ballard announced on Wednesday afternoon that Luck won’t be practicing this week, and team doctors have recommended shutting down his throwing as he continues to work his way back to game readiness after offseason shoulder surgery.

Via Stephen Holder of the Indy Star, who posted a series of tweets from Ballard’s unplanned news conference, Ballard said Luck is having some soreness and received a cortisone shot.

Team doctors have said Luck’s discomfort isn’t unusual, and is due to his increased workload. Structurally, Luck’s shoulder is fine.

Ballard said the velocity has been up on Luck’s throws, and that his rehab has been going well. While Ballard wouldn’t say how long the shutdown will last — “I don’t think it’ll be long … He’s made great strides,” he remarked — he did say the team is not putting Luck, the No. 1 overall pick in 2012, on injured reserved and that at the moment there is no consideration of putting Luck on IR.

When he’s back throwing, Ballard said Luck will be able to pick up where he left off in terms of his practice plan.

Jacoby Brissett, who the Colts acquired via trade with the New England Patriots on Sept. 1, has started the last five games. A second-year quarterback, Brissett has had some stellar moments and others that have been shaky; Indianapolis is 2-3 with Brissett as starter.
