Colts request to interview DeMeco Ryans for head coach vacancy

The Indianapolis Colts requested to interview San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans for their head coach vacancy, per Adam Schefter of ESPN on Monday.

Ryans is one of the hottest names on the market after his 49ers defense has proven to be the best the in the NFL. He’s likely to have a jam-packed schedule in terms of interviews moving forward.

The Colts have already interviewed seven candidates since the season ended, and they put in a request to interview New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka as well.

A second-round pick out of Alabama in the 2006 NFL draft, Ryans spent six seasons with the Houston Texans (2006-2011) and spent the final four seasons of his career with the Philadelphia Eagles (2012-2015).

He got his start in coaching with the 49ers as a defensive quality control coach in 2017. He was then promoted to inside linebackers coach, a role he held for three seasons (2018-2020). He’s been the defensive coordinator for the last two seasons (2021-present).

Ryans has been known to connect well with his players, and his recent success as a defensive coordinator makes him a popular candidate.

The head coaching search will be led by general manager Chris Ballard, but the decision ultimately resides with owner Jim Irsay.
