Colts QB Chad Kelly suspended two games over weird trespassing incident

When the Indianapolis Colts signed quarterback Chad Kelly, the unanswered question was whether the NFL would suspend him for a trespassing arrest that got him cut from the Denver Broncos.

The NFL, as it often does, dropped the news late on a Friday afternoon. The league suspended Kelly for two games, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

The suspension closes the book on that incident, though the story will follow Kelly for a while.

Chad Kelly suspended two games

Last year, with Kelly seemingly closing in on significant playing time with starting Broncos quarterback Case Keenum struggling, Kelly made some surprising headlines.

He was arrested on first-degree criminal trespassing after attending teammate Von Miller’s Halloween party. Kelly entered a home uninvited and sat on a couch next to a woman nursing her young child. He was incoherent. The male in the home hit Kelly with an aluminum vacuum tube and chased him from the house.

The Broncos couldn’t keep him around after that. Kelly, the nephew of Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly (an old Bills teammate of current Colts coach Frank Reich), slipped in the 2017 draft due in part to off-field issues. Denver took him with the final pick of the draft. They cut him shortly after the arrest, but the Colts were willing to take a chance this offseason.

Kelly won’t escape past

Kelly won’t be able to easily escape his past. Gregg Doyel of the Indianapolis Star wrote a column this week criticizing the Colts for signing Kelly, pointing out he was kicked off his high school team, first college team (Clemson) and first NFL team. Doyel reminded us that when Kelly was at Ole Miss, he was arrested after fighting with a bouncer and said "I'm going to go to my car and get my AK-47 and spray this place.”

Kelly is third string on the Colts, at best. Indianapolis could take a look at him in preseason and decide whether he’s worth carrying on the roster, given the two-game suspension.

Perhaps Kelly can make the most of another chance and make everyone forget what happened that led to his release from the Broncos, as hard as that will be.
