Colts’ Frank Reich ranked 7th among NFL head coaches

Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich was ranked seventh among NFL head coaches by Dalton Miller of Pro Football Network.

Breaking the coaches down into tiers, Reich was listed in the “Still somewhat new but appear to be a great” tier. Only one other coach was listed in this tier, and that was Sean McDermott of the Buffalo Bills.

“7) Frank Reich, Indianapolis Colts

Frank Reich might be a top-three NFL coach, but it’s tough to know after what’s been a revolving door at quarterback in his first three seasons as a head coach. Andrew Luck retired in August 2019, and the Colts won seven games with Jacoby Brissett as the starter.

In 2020, the only year with an over-the-hill Philip Rivers, the team went 11-5. Reich’s offenses appear to maximize the quarterback, and the defenses appear incredibly well-coached.”

It does feel that Reich sometimes doesn’t get the credit he deserves for what he’s had to deal with during his four years as head coach. With Carson Wentz now the starting quarterback, Reich will have had four different starters behind center in each of his first four seasons as head coach.

The fact that he’s 28-20 in the regular season despite all that he’s dealt with is truly an achievement.

Now with the Wentz trade, Reich is certainly sticking his neck out for his former quarterback. But he’s made it clear that that’s perfectly fine with him given what he sees from the 28-year-old quarterback.

The Colts have a pretty tough schedule coming up in 2020, but they always have a chance with Reich at the helm.
