Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz returned to the practice field Monday for the first time since undergoing surgery on his foot and is optimistic he can return for the Week 1 opener against the Seattle Seahawks.

Despite how he looked on the field in his return on Monday, the Colts are still taking it slow. They need to see how he responds to being back after weeks off, but there is certainly optimism Wentz will be ready for the opener at Lucas Oil Stadium.

“I’m optimistic but we’ll see. Honestly, it’s not fully my call like I was saying, it’s going to come down to the doctors and surgeons and trainers and seeing how we feel,” Wentz told reporters Monday. “A lot will depend on how I respond and how the foot feels day after day after being out here.”

Wentz was pretty involved in the practice session on Monday. He didn’t have any reps during the 11-on-11 team drills but did look like a player who isn’t bothered by a foot injury during the 7-on-7 work, of which he had plenty.

The Colts will continue to test the foot to see how Wentz responds while also listening to the medical team on how much they can progress each time.

“For sure. It’s a lot more than what you see out in practice. There’s stuff after and before and things just to keep testing the foot and get it to where we need it to be so I can hopefully be out here doing team sooner than later,” Wentz said. “It’s going to be up to the doctors, for sure. At the end of the day, as long as there’s nothing I can do to injure myself or make it worse, I know I’ve played through a lot worse but it’s going to come down to what the doctor’s say.”

It will be interesting to see if Wentz winds up being ready for Week 1 but if Monday was any indication, there’s a chance he doesn’t miss any time at all.
