The Indianapolis Colts were hit with an inevitability on Tuesday when quarterback Carson Wentz was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list, effectively keeping out of the Week 17 matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Now, the Colts have to game plan without their starting quarterback and potentially without their starting offensive line. Though the team may express confidence in rookie Sam Ehlinger to take over, should the team give a call to their 2020 starter in Philip Rivers?

The 40-year-old quarterback hasn’t played all season since announcing his retirement during the offseason but did express an interest in making a return for the right situation. The New Orleans Saints reportedly reached out during Week 16 with the majority of their quarterback room out.

As of Monday, the Colts hadn’t reached out to Rivers as a possible replacement given the recent outbreak of positive tests in the locker room and around the league.

That said, the Colts have a chance to clinch the playoffs with a win on Sunday against the Raiders. All they have to do is win. And there is an argument that Rivers could give the Colts their best chance at winning even with a depleted offensive line and without having practiced this season.

During his 2020 season with the Colts, Rivers 68.0% of his passes for 4,169 yards, 24 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while helping lead the Colts to an 11-5 record and a wild-card berth.

Can he give the Colts the same type of production in one game? Maybe not. But it’s at least worth giving him a call to gauge his interest and see if he can pull some magic out in a game the Colts have to win.

It’s more likely the Colts will roll with rookie Sam Ehlinger, but the Colts should at least give Rivers a call.
