Colorado football: Deion Sanders wants “every box checked” by end of spring

Deion Sanders does things a little differently than most other head coaches.

His mix of old school and new school is certainly unique in today’s age of college football, and the hope at Colorado is that Coach Prime’s approach will soon translate to wins.

Here at the start of April, Sanders is setting new standards at a rapid pace as the Buffaloes navigate spring camp. Several months still separate us from the season opener, but the foundation for 2023 is being laid.

Following the Buffs’ first official spring practice in mid-March, I asked Sanders if there were any specific boxes he’d like to have checked by the end of Colorado’s spring season. Expecting to receive an answer mentioning the new playbooks or how he’d like to see chemistry develop, Coach Prime gave a response that epitomized how he leads.

“We need every box checked,” Sanders said. “I got to see how the coaches communicate with players; I got to see how the players communicate with the coaches. The strength and conditioning, the training staff, the equipment staff, we’re checking everything because this is a total commitment of unification to win. It’s not just us on the field. Everybody in this darn building got to understand that we are winners. It has to change, it has to be provoked, and that’s why we’re here. But we’re trying to check every darn box. If it was great, I wouldn’t be here.”

It was announced on Thursday that tickets for Colorado’s spring game on April 22, which will be televised on ESPN, have been sold-out for the first time in program history.
