Colombian fan fired after drinking booze smuggled into stadium inside binoculars

One of the most common pieces of professional advice you hear nowadays is to be extremely careful of what you post on Facebook because your boss might see it. Just ask Luis Felipe Gomez. Gomez was one of the reported 65,000 Colombian soccer fans that traveled to Russia to cheer on their team in the World Cup. When he arrived at the stadium on Tuesday for Colombia’s opener against Japan, he was a regional manager for the Colombian airline Avianca Cargo.

Now it seems one of the first things he’ll need to do when he gets home is to update his LinkedIn profile. Mr. Gomez was one of a group of fans seen in a social media post drinking alcohol that was smuggled into the stadium inside a pair of binoculars.

Some might have praised the Colombia fans for their festive spirit and good-humored ingenuity. Apparently, Mr. Gomez’s boss was not one of them.

By the time the final whistle had blown, and Colombia had been handed a surprise 2-1 loss by Japan, the video had blown up and the word “binoculares” was trending on social media in Colombia. Gomez was soon identified as one of the fans in the video enjoying a shot of binocular booze. The following day, his employment with the airline was subsequently terminated.

Gomez, who can be seen wearing a cap and Colombian flag face paint as he took a shot from the binoculars, has insisted he hardly knew the other fans in the video. Poor guy probably thought it was his lucky day, meeting new friends and getting a free shot of booze from a pair of binoculars.

Let’s hope for his sake, at least, that Colombia bounces back when it faces Poland in its next match on Sunday.
