Collin Morikawa's victory at the PGA Championship was a truly remarkable feat. The young American only became a pro in June last year and was playing in only his second major.

Morikawa has made a rapid rise in the world of professional golf, Telegraph Sport gives you the low-down on a potential superstar in the sport.

1. Collin Morikawa has made a superb start to his career

Morikawa started his PGA Tour career by making 22 consecutive cuts. Only a certain Tiger Woods started his career by making more, an impressive 25 in a row.

2. Morikawa is performing at a level rare for someone so young

The Californian became the third youngest ever Men's PGA Championship winner in the strokeplay era. He achieved the feat at 23 years and 185 days old. Only Rory McIlroy and Jack Nicklaus won younger - although both were also 23 at the time. Morikawa nudged Woods down that illustrious list, winning the tournament 44 days younger than when Woods lifted the title.

3. His recent weekend performance is unparalleled

At TPC Harding Park, Morikawa scored 65 in round three, and shot 64 in round four. His total weekend score of 129 is the lowest ever by a major winner.

4. Morikawa has amateur pedigree

The 23-year-old was briefly ranked as the number one amateur in the world in May 2018. He turned pro in 2019 and has gone from strength to strength since.

5. He has proven experience is not always a necessity

As well as being the third youngest ever winner of the PGA Championship, Morikawa has previously proven that his youth has provided no limitation in lifting silverware. In fact, it took only six pro starts for Morikawa to secure his first PGA Tour victory, the 2019 Barracuda Championship.

6. Morikawa's world ranking is improving at a rapid rate

At the end of 2019, Morikawa was ranked 65 in the world. Before the start of the PGA Championship, his form had earned him the number 12 spot. Following his victory, Morikawa now sits at number five in the world rankings. A meteoric rise.
