College Sports Wire includes UF-Utah among most intriguing Week 1 games

The start of the 2023 college football season has finally arrived for the Gator Nation as Florida prepares to face the Utah Utes inside Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City to open up the schedule.

The two teams are set for a rematch of last season’s first game in which the Gators started the 2022 campaign with a 29-26 win in the Swamp thanks to some late-game heroics. Unfortunately, they stumbled to a sub-.500 finish for the year after a tough SEC schedule with a 6-7 final record, while their opponent posted a 10-4 record and won the Pac-12 championship game against the USC Trojans.

Ahead of the Week 1 gridiron action, College Sports Wire surveyed editors and writers from SMG’s constellation of sites to get a consensus on a variety of topics, including the Week 1 matchups that have the most intrigue. Most of the respondents cited the FSU-LSU game, but editor Patrick Conn also gave a nod to the UF-UU game.

The easy answer is LSU vs. Florida State, and I won’t fault any of my colleagues who picked that game. However, I am more interested in the Florida vs. Utah matchup on Thursday evening. Can the Utes avenge last season’s loss without Cameron Rising under center?

Florida opens its 2023 schedule on the road against Utah on Thursday, Aug. 31, with a kickoff time of 8 p.m. EDT.
