College roundup: Canton's Mahoney named Liberty League Rookie of Week

Mar. 4—Canton's Daniel Mahoney was selected as the Liberty League's men's lacrosse Rookie of the Week for his outing for St. Lawrence University on Saturday in Rochester.

Mahoney scored a career-high four goals in a game against St. John Fisher and added two ground balls. St. Lawrence won the game 12-8.

Mahoney's teammate Michael Marinello was also honored by the Liberty League as Defensive Performer of the Week. Marinello recorded a career-high 19 saves in the victory over St. John Fisher, recording a .704 save percentage.

It's the third straight week that a Saints player has won the defensive award in lacrosse. SLU's Paddy Condon won last week and Alex Bechard won the week before that for the No. 15 Saints.



SUNY Potsdam split a pair of games against two opponents Monday in Naples, Fla.

The Bears lost to Bethany College 5-4 in the first game but then blanked Clark University 7-0 in the second.

In the second game, former Indian River athlete Hailey Bushaw drove in a pair of runs with a single. Sophia Pleat also knocked in two runs. Anna Brown pitched a shutout, the first of her career, allowing just two hits for Potsdam (2-4).

In the first game, Katelyn Ziems drove in a pair of runs and went 3-for-4 for Bethany College. Josie Wise went the distance for the Bison, allowing four runs, two earned, on eight hits and seven strikeouts

Kaylee LaForest hit a pair of singles and knocked in two runs for the Bears. Kaylee Dobransky added two hits and had four hits total on the day.



St. Lawrence's Angelica Aksdal-Jansen received Performer of the Week honors from the Liberty League after gaining two victories from the No. 1 singles spot over the weekend.

Aksdal-Jansen, a sophomore, defeated Ithaca's Taylor Crain, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 on Saturday and beat Skidmore's Konika Dhull 7-5, 6-3 on Sunday.

The Saints men's tennis team also gained Performer of the Week for Edvin Strandberg, who produced a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) victory in his match against Ithaca's Emiliano Pedrero. Strandberg also won his doubles match.

The Saints men's doubles team of Adam Heilbronner and Broderick Pinto claimed weekly honors after gaining a victory against Ithaca by an 8-5 score over Gijs Fidler and Pedrero.



SUNY Canton senior Nic Herringer has signed a professional tryout contract with the Evansville Thunderbolts of the Southern Professional Hockey League.

Evansville announced the signing last week.

Herringer played two seasons for SUNY Canton and five seasons of college hockey overall, also playing at Wisconsin-River Falls.

He finished with 16 goals and 21 assists for his career with SUNY Canton.
