College baseball player soars over catcher to score a breathtaking run

While college basketball stole the show on a wild, upset-filled Friday, college baseball had its share of crazy moments too.

The craziest of which, by far, took place during the Pittsburgh-North Carolina game at Chapel Hill. Because that’s where Pitt’s Alex Amos went full Chris Coghlan to engineer an early candidate for the most spectacular run-scoring play of the season.

It happened in the very first inning, and unfortunately for Pitt, it would be one of their few highlights during a 15-3 loss to UNC. With Amos on third, David Yanni hit a fly ball to right fielder Cody Roberts, who came up firing to home plate. The throw beat Amos, and catcher Brandon Moterano was prepared to make the tag. However, he wasn’t prepared for Amos to go airborne and jump completely over him.

Check it out.

First of all…. Wow!

Second … Ouch! That looked like a pretty painful landing on his left shoulder.

Third …. Wow again! Because even after clearing the catcher in the air, Amos had to beat him again to get his hand on the plate.

Unfortunately, there are no style points in baseball. Otherwise the 11 straight runs North Carolina scored right after this wouldn’t have been nearly enough to overcome that play.

As it was, Pitt would lose the game in lopsided fashion. But if there’s a silver lining, aside from making all of the highlight reels, it’s that they’ll have a chance to redeem themselves when the teams meet again on Saturday and Sunday.
