College of Idaho Coyotes claw past Lewis-Clark State Warriors in men's basketball

Feb. 3—The Lewis-Clark State men's basketball team was left in the dust by No. 3 College of Idaho in a 104-63 Cascade Conference loss Friday at the P1FCU Activity Center.

The Coyotes now have sole possession of first place in the Cascade Conference.

"Credit to COI," LCSC coach Austin Johnson said in a news release. "We did not handle their physicality well at all and the game got away from us early. All year our guys have responded well in adversity and I'm excited to see how we respond against a good and very well-rested EOU team."

Here's how things went down:

First-half woes

A Jaedon Bradley 3 brought the Warriors (15-6, 13-2) to within 23-13 with 11:45 left in the first half, and after that, the Coyotes (19-2, 14-1) imposed their will for three minutes.

College of Idaho went on a 13-0 run to take a 36-13 advantage with 8:01 remaining in the opening frame and was 10-of-11 from the field during the spurt.

During the run, COI was 3-of-4 from behind the 3-point line.

At the end of the first half, six different Coyotes had converted a 3-pointer, and they were 8-for-14 from distance and 20-of-30 from the field (66.7%).

A layup from freshman forward Alton Hamilton put an end to the Coyotes' run with 7:35 remaining in the first half to pull the Warriors to 36-15.

After Hamitlon's score, the pair of Cascade Conference foes traded baskets until a Jake O'Neil layup ignited a 6-0 Coyote run to put them in front 47-23 with 1:49 to go in the first half.

COI went into the locker room with a 50-26 advantage and was outscoring the Warriors 20-12 in the paint.

The Coyotes only turned the ball over once in the first half and were outscoring LCSC 10-0 in points off turnovers.

College of Idaho also had a comfortable 18-9 rebound advantage in the first half.

Second half more the same

Lewis-Clark State started the second half with some juice, and senior guard Davian Brown scored its inaugural six points to pull it to within 54-32. But that's about as good as it would get for the Warriors.

The Coyotes responded with a 14-3 run to pull ahead 68-35 with 14:18 left in regulation.

College of Idaho outscored the Warriors 54-37 in the second half.

The Coyotes finished 41-for-61 (67.2%) from the field and 14-of-27 (51.9%) from behind the 3-point line.

Lewis-Clark State ended the night 26-of-58 (47.3%) from the floor and 7-of-20 from distance.

College of Idaho outscored the Warriors 42-24 in the paint.

Players of the game

The Coyotes had five players in double figures. O'Neil contributed a game-high 17 points, and Paul Wilson chipped in 16.

Samaje Morgan notched 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting, and Tyler Robinett added 14. Johnny Radford had 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting.

Drew Wyman had a team-high eight rebounds for COI. The Coyotes outrebounded Lewis-Clark State 33-19.

The Warriors were paced by Quentin Raynor's 15 points, and Brown added 10.
