College Heights tops Columbus in Lancer Classic

Jan. 17—The College Heights Christian School Cougars girls basketball team avenged a 19-point loss from December by taking down the Titans of Columbus High School in Kansas on Wednesday.

The Cougars earned a 57-52 victory in the opening round of the Lancer Classic at Southeast High School in Cherokee, Kansas.

CHCS (6-7) trailed 16-14 after a high-scoring first quarter but picked things up defensively in the second and third quarters to hold a 41-35 lead heading into the fourth.

The Titans only managed 10 points in the second stanza and 9 in the third.

Columbus fought to keep it close with four 3-pointers in the final period of play. But CHCS stuck right with them as Ava Lett knocked down two treys in the fourth quarter and the team made a total of 10 free throws to ice the game.

Libby Fanning led the way with 24 points while Lett complimented that with 13. Lett made four 3-point baskets in the game — two in the first half before the fourth-quarter triples. Maddy Colin scored 9 points and started strong with 5 in the first quarter.

Columbus was led by Katy Mooney's 14 points and four 3-pointers; Ellie Helms added 11.

The Cougars will meet the team from Neodesha, Kansas, on Friday in the semifinals of the tournament. The time for that contest has yet to be decided.
