College football bowl projections: First weekend shakes up postseason lineup after the playoff

All of that information gleaned from spring practice and training camp is out the window. Those prognostications in preseason polls and preview magazines become meaningless when college football games begin.

Week 1 brought surprises and disappointments and already started to shape how the postseason will look.

The ACC saw its top three teams all lose, including Clemson, which has made the College Football Playoff for six consecutive seasons. Penn State and Iowa had huge wins to start their Big Ten campaigns, while Wisconsin and Indiana took a step back.

The top of the Big 12 looked vulnerable as Oklahoma and Iowa State needed fourth-quarter stands to survive overmatched opponents. And then there's Alabama. The Crimson Tide picked up where they left off last year - as the sport's most-dominant team.

WINNERS, LOSERS: Georgia, UCLA get statement wins

The loss by Clemson didn't really change the playoff outlook. The Tigers just need to hold serve the rest of the way and they'll likely be in the field. Ohio State and Oklahoma had shaky moments, but they're still in solid shape for now.

It's below the playoff field where much has changed. Penn State and Texas move up to New Year's Six bowls with North Carolina and Iowa State falling out. Among those improving their positions off big wins are UCLA, Virginia Tech and Kansas State.
