Could Willie Taggart get a new contract to stay at Oregon after just one season with the school?

According to multiple reports, the school has offered Taggart a new contract with the hopes of keeping him in Eugene. Taggart came to Oregon from South Florida after Oregon fired Mark Helfrich following the 2016 season.

Taggart is seen as a strong candidate to coach at Florida State. If, of course, Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher leaves the school for Texas A&M. The Aggies have had eyes for Fisher since firing Kevin Sumlin over the weekend. According to USA Today, FSU has started researching Taggart if Fisher is to change jobs.

The contract offer to Taggart came last week and would be a one-year extension. From Oregon Live:

A source confirmed to The Oregonian/OregonLive that UO’s deal to Taggart would be worth just more than $20 million over five years, including incentives.

Oregon finished the regular season 7-5 after beating Oregon State in the Civil War. Taggart’s tenure got off to a rocky start in the offseason after the school’s strength coach was suspended when multiple players suffered rhabdomyolysis after intense conditioning workouts.

During the season, Oregon got bowl eligible despite injuries to many key players including quarterback Justin Herbert.

A former assistant to Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh when Harbaugh was at Stanford, Taggart spent four years at South Florida after three years as the head coach at Western Kentucky.
