Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield says he has fractured bone in shoulder in addition to torn labrum

CLEVELAND — Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield revealed more about the extent of his left shoulder injury during a recent interview with Fox's Jay Glazer, saying he has a fractured humerus bone.

Late Thursday night after the Browns defeated the Denver Broncos 17-14 at FirstEnergy Stadium, coach Kevin Stefanski said the fracture doesn't change the equation for Mayfield returning this season.

“I'm not going to get into specifics of Baker’s injury at this time," Stefanski said. "He's another guy who's fighting, and he'll be back out there as soon as he can.”

Mayfield had already publicly disclosed he suffered a completely torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder Sept. 19 against the Houston Texans and further damaged it in Sunday's 37-14 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

During Thursday night's "NFL on Fox Pregame" show, Glazer said Mayfield told him about the fracture in an interview Wednesday. The scan Mayfield had earlier this week showed the fracture, which the QB told Glazer occurred when his shoulder dislocated this past weekend on a J.J. Watt sack. Mayfield said the fracture is preventing his rotator cuff from firing.

“I need that fracture to heal for me to get back out there,” Mayfield told Glazer.

Case Keenum started in place of Mayfield on "Thursday Night Football" and completed 21-of-33 passes for 199 yards and a touchdown without an interception for a rating of 90.3.

Glazer said he asked Mayfield the timeline for his return, whereupon Mayfield said, "I'm hoping for next week."

Is there a chance Mayfield can play in the Browns' next game Oct. 31 against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Cleveland?

"Yeah, I mean, of course there's a chance for all of it," Stefanski said. "But we're too far away from it to give you a good number."

Stefanski said Keenum didn't receive any first-team repetitions Tuesday in the Browns' only real practice during their short work week leading up to Thursday night's game. That means the Browns gave Mayfield those first-team reps on Tuesday with the belief he still had a chance to face the Broncos.

Instead, Mayfield sat out, snapping his streak of 53 consecutive starts dating to his rookie season in 2018, when the Browns draft him first overall out of the University of Oklahoma. He was on the sideline Thursday night to assist Keenum during the game.

“Bake was great. He was locked in," Keenum said. "He was very helpful with the pictures and breaking down defenses and what we were getting."
