Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews was reportedly taken to the emergency room after taking a line drive to the face while pitching in a charity softball game.

Matthews nearly got his glove up to protect his face, but walked off the field immediately in apparent pain:

The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that “the belief” is that Matthews suffered a broken nose and nothing more – which would be a major relief.

WBAY’s Dave Schroeder reported that Matthews was “doing fine” – meaning the ER visit was likely just precautionary:

Packers wide receiver Devante Adams later took an opportunity to tell the crowd that “Clay is alright,” and that the injury is just “a little boo-boo.” That might be an understatement, but it appears Matthews has avoided any serious damage.

When the game resumed, a screen had been brought out for the pitchers to pitch behind:

Matthews took to Twitter on Saturday afternoon, confirming that he was fine but will need surgery.

“Thank you for all the concern and well-wishes,” Matthews tweeted. “I busted my nose pretty good and will have surgery once the swelling subsides. Thankful as it could have been much more serious.”

This story will be update when more information on Matthews’ condition is known.
