Dame & CJ think Vanterpool being a head coach "only a matter of time" originally appeared on NBC Sports Northwest
David Vanterpool is a well-known name among Trail Blazers fans.
From 2012 to 2019, Vanterpool could be seen on the Portland bench as a key member of head coach Terry Stotts' staff.
As an assistant with Portland, Vanterpool was largely credited with fostering the maturation and development of star guards Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum.
In 2018, the two players and their mentor sat down with Chris Haynes to talk about their relationship.
It was evident that the three were inseparable. Unfortunately, the fear was always in the back of their mind that the trio would break-up, not because they wanted to, but because every other team would eventually come knocking on Vanterpool's door.
In the summer of 2019, that fear came to life when Vanterpool accepted an offer from the Minnesota Timberwolves to become the team's associate head coach, bringing him one step closer to landing a head coaching gig.
As expected, his two protégés were sad to see him leave.
During his last few seasons in Portland, Vanterpool was linked to numerous head coach openings and that hasn't changed in Minnesota with Vanterpool reportedly interviewing to be the Houston Rockets head coach.
Whether in Houston or elsewhere, Vanterpool will eventually land his dream job and McCollum knows it.
When asked what he thought about Vanterpool being linked to Houston, McCollum had this to say to NBCSNW:
McCollum isn't the only member of the Trail Blazers that thinks Vanterpool is head coaching material.
All-star Damian Lillard tweeted the former Blazers assistant needs to be a head coach or "people ain't doing they job."
All these Jobs open in the NBA ... if David Vanterpool ain’t in one of these slots when the season start then people ain’t doing they job 🤷🏽♂️— Damian Lillard (@Dame_Lillard) October 5, 2020
When you are responsible for helping build one the best backcourts in the NBA, one of the best leaders in the NBA, and helped mentor one of the greatest Blazers of all-time, you are bound to get the call-up.
When will it happen? No one knows. But we do know it is going to happen eventually. Like McCollum said, "it's only a matter of time."
