The challenge promotes "collaboration and empowerment," while each participant in the One Barrel Challenge has donated the equivalent of one barrel of wine (25 cases) to the cause.

The One Barrel Challenge symbolizes a collective dream of making our beloved wine industry more accessible and inclusive regardless of color, class, or creed.

– A statement from this year’s One Barrel Challenge press release

"The One Barrel Challenge was brought to life by a group of like-minded wineries with the goal to create one-of-a-kind wines while pledging 100% of those proceeds to make sure that everyone who dreams of participating in the Wine Industry is given that opportunity."

Of the seven wineries in the Willamette Valley, Channing Frye, who started the One Barrel Challenge, and CJ McCollum are part of the group looking to help increase diversity in the wine industry through the One Barrel Challenge.

Frye, who was, and still is, a fan favorite in Portland after playing for the Trail Blazers from 2007 to 2009, is now gaining ground in the wine industry.

Frye started Chosen Family Wines in collaboration with L’Angolo Estate in Newberg, Oregon, which launched last fall.

He has discussed how his wine label is one of just 70 Black-owned wine businesses in the entire country.

Frye and his business partner Jacob Gray are working to increase that number.

The two came up with the One Barrel Challenge while asking other wineries to donate a barrel of wine to the cause.

McCollum’s 2019 Chardonnay is available through this year’s One Barrel Challenge.
