Before we begin the new week in earnest, we're taking a look back at the week that was, and the stories that led the news with Taunton Daily Gazette readers.
This week, a local ATV rider's reaction to new rules concerning the vehicles in Taunton was our top story by far. The main story, about the new ATV rules, also made our Top 5 stories this past week.
There was also the city election, with some new faces joining the Taunton City Council and the School Committee.
For the third week, the story of Aubriella Derosier, who recently died at age 6 after a long battle with mitochondrial disease, was also one of the stories that resonated most with readers this past week.
Rounding out the Top 5 is our latest real estate report, where a Taunton Portuguese club recently bought property near its popular restaurant.
These were the Top 5 stories of the past week, according to Gazette readers:
Taunton ATV rider reacts to new rules
Mikael Sanchez, a 17-year-old senior at Taunton High School, says, when it comes to ATV riders, "Don't judge a book by its cover."
Sanchez was reacting to new ordinances that the city is beginning to enforce to curb reckless ATV and dirt bike riding. He started "508 Taunton Bikelife" as a lifestyle brand last December. He's also hoping to find some space for his group to ride in the industrial park.
Gazette Reporter Chris Helms recently spoke with Sanchez about his reactions to the new ordinance, and to hear the perspective of an ATV rider. That story is here.
'Zero tolerance': New ATV rules in Taunton
The Taunton City Council recently finished approving new ordinances surrounding ATV and dirt bike riding in the city, after numerous complaints about reckless drivers. A key element of the new ordinance? Reckless ATV and dirt bike drivers could soon see their rides impounded until their court cases are settled.
With these new rules, Taunton Police have the power to impound the ATVs of operators who get arrested. The vehicles won't be returned to their owners until any criminal or civil charges are settled.
"Zero tolerance," said City Council President Chris Coute. "We take it, we keep it till the case is done."
Taunton election results
This past week, Taunton voters elected two new faces to the City Council, brought back a familiar one, as well as electing three new faces to the School Committee.
Estele Borges, a former city councilor and mayoral candidate, was the top vote getter and returns to the City Council. Joining her are newcomers Kelly Dooner and Larry Quintal.
Mayor Shaunna O'Connell, who ran unopposed, was re-elected.
Tuesday's election was another disappointment for candidates of color. It's been more than 30 years since a person of color served on the City Council.
Voter turnout for this election was low, as expected, just 18.9%.
Remembering Aubriella Derosier
For the third week, the story of Aubriella Derosier, the 6-year-old daugther of Taunton Police Officer Jeremy Derosier and his wife Jamie, touched the hearts of many readers.
She passed away recently after a long battle with mitochondrial disease. Her little brother Bryce also had mitochondrial disease, and passed away in 2018 at just 16 months old.
In her final days, the Derosiers went through their daughter's bucket list with her, including time spent at the beach and even a fairytale wedding. They made sure that, most of all, she was surrounded by love.
