CHS wrestlers finish regular season at Pojoaque Invite

Jan. 30—POJOAQUE — Clovis High's wrestlers finished off the regular season over the weekend in the Pojoaque Invite, with the boys placing ninth out of 15 teams with 195 points while the girls were 12th out of 18 squads with 28 points.

Los Lunas took the boys' team title, scoring 626 1/2 points to 556 1/2 for runnerup Aztec. On the girls' side, Moriarty edged Kirtland Central 102-101 for team honors.

Highlighting performances for the Wildcats were sixth-place finishes by senior Eduardo Torres at 160 pounds and sophomore Kaleb King at 215. Meantime, junior Kaell Berry at 133, senior Fidel Madrid at 139 and sophomore Adrian Ulibarri at 189 all finished ninth.

In the final round, Torres lost his match for fifth place to West Las Vegas sophomore Korbyn Harvey on a second-period fall, and King dropped a 12-1 decision to sophomore Andrew Romero of Los Lunas.

Meantime, Berry won by forfeit in the final round while Madrid notched a third-period pin against junior Adrien Ulibarri of Santa Fe High and Royal scored a first-period fall over sophomore Mishen Jaramillo of Moriarty.

The girls wrestled in either brackets or round-robin pools on Friday and Saturday.

For the Lady Wildcats, sophomore Zulehiny Mendoza took third at 2-2 in Friday's five-person pool, then finished fourth in a four-person bracket on Saturday after losing to Carlsbad sophomore Emily Fuentes by third-period pin.

Freshman Guadalupe Guzman and junior Jaylyn Trujillo competed in five-person brackets in the 185-235 division. Guadalupe went 2-2 for third and Trujillo 1-3 for fourth on Friday, while Guzman was fourth and Trujillo fifth in Saturday's competition.

Also on Saturday, sophomore Sunnay Ward earned fourth place with a 2-3 record in a six-person round-robin.

Regional competition is slated for the girls this weekend at Silver City, and for the boys next weekend at Roswell. The state wrestling meet is on tap Feb. 23-24 in Albuquerque.
