Wondo's 97th-minute goal momentarily saves Quakes' season originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

Leave it to MLS legend Chris Wondolowski to score a legendary goal for the Earthquakes.

With the Quakes' 2020 season on the brink of ending in regulation in the MLS playoffs against top-seeded Sporting KC on Sunday, Wondo found the back of the net to force extra time.

Unfortunately for Wondo and the Quakes, they weren't able to complete the upset. After going scoreless in 30 minutes of extra time, Sporting KC won in a shootout, sending San Jose into the offseason.

But for a moment, Wondo gave the Quakes hope that they could advance.

With the No. 8-seeded Quakes trailing 3-2 in the 97th minute, Wondo headed home a centering pass to tie the game.

While there originally should only have been four minutes of stoppage time, Sporting KC scored in the first minute of stoppage time and took their sweet time celebrating, so the referees let the teams continue to play.

Wondolowski, the 37-year-old Danville native, is the all-time leader in regular-season goals in MLS history with 166. Will he add to that total in 2021? That remains to be seen as the icon is contemplating retirement.
