Bassitt, A's 'grateful' for Melvin after stunning exit originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

Bob Melvin's decision to reportedly become the San Diego Padres' newest manager stunned the baseball world, as the veteran skipper decided to move on after 11 years with the Athletics. Players like Chris Bassitt, one of the A's longest-tenured pitchers, were saddened to hear the news but also appreciative of the time they got to work with the three-time Manager of the Year.

A number of Melvin's former players also spoke with The Athletic's Andy McCullough back in May.

“Bob is my favorite manager I ever played for,” retired reliever Jerry Blevins told McCullough.

“I love Bob Melvin,” retired outfielder Jonny Gomes told McCullough. “I truly love Bob Melvin.”
