There are few NFL players out there that know Odell Beckham Jr. better than Kansas City Chiefs S Tyrann Mathieu.

Beckham was a freshman when Mathieu was a sophomore at LSU in 2011 and they would have been teammates the following year had Mathieu not been kicked off the team. Both natives of New Orleans, Louisiana, Beckham and Mathieu instantly bonded and have maintained a friendship ever since.

Asked whether he’s been campaigning for his former teammate to join forces with him in Kansas City, Mathieu downplayed the situation. The Chiefs might be one of the teams talking shop with Beckham, but Mathieu didn’t seem to know much in that regard. He chalked it up to simply wanting what’s best for his friend, whether that’s with the Chiefs or elsewhere.

“I don’t know if I’m necessarily campaigning,” Mathieu told reporters on Thursday. “But any time you can add talent to the team, that always benefits and helps the whole team. Obviously, from a personal perspective, I just want him in the best situation possible going forward and hoping that whatever ends up for him it can bring out the best for him.”

Beckham Jr. has developed a reputation of sorts, especially with his recent departure from the Cleveland Browns. Some believe that he’s selfish and not a good teammate. Mathieu doesn’t buy that, though. He sought to dispel any myths about Beckham Jr. and what he’ll be bringing to a new team.

“He’s an elite wide receiver,” Mathieu said. “So, I think all those guys want the football. But outside of that, he has always been a stand-up guy. He has always been a great teammate. I could remember instances back at LSU where he did a lot of the team bonding things, having guys over, working out with guys, staying late with guys after practice. I think most of the people that know him and have played with him — I think we all see him as a pretty solid teammate.”

If the Chiefs are making a push to sign Beckham Jr., they’re keeping it close to the chest. While Mathieu claims the two are in constant communication, he says he hasn’t spoken to his former teammate about joining Kansas City.

“We talk pretty much all the time, back and forth,” Mathieu said. “Rarely is it ever about football, but we haven’t really spoken on that.”

The latest reports have Beckham Jr. holding off until after Week 10 before he makes his decision to sign with a new team.
