Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes helped inform design of Oakley Kato sunglasses

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has teamed up with Oakley once again, this time informing the development and design of a product 45 years in the making. Mahomes and Oakley previously collaborated on his own signature eyewear collection.

On Thursday, Oakley debuted their brand-new Kato design, an all-sport, purpose-built piece of eyewear set to be worn by approximately 1,000 team Oakley Athletes at the Tokyo Olympics this summer. Kato fits your face in an almost mask-like design, featuring frameless Oakley Prizm lenses, an extended wrap and a number of unique customizable features.

During the development of this product, Mahomes was among an elite group of athletes selected to test the prototype. That group also included cyclist Mark Cavendish, BMX athlete Nigel Sylvester, and racecar driver Joseph Newgarden. The extensive testing and feedback by Mahomes and these athletes ultimately informed the final design of Oakley Kato.

“We wake up every morning obsessed with the goal of igniting human possibility,” Oakley Global Brand Director, Caio Amato, wrote in a press release. “Our pursuit for the new and unimagined has taken on many forms throughout the brand’s history, and the latest is Oakley Kato – a redefinition of aesthetics to usher in a new age of optics for the sports industry. Today represents more than just the release of a new product, it is a moment to remind ourselves that anything is possible, that superheroes are not just found in comic books, but in real life, and we can all aspire to be better than we ever imagined.”

As part of the launch for Oakley Kato, the eyewear company sent their athletes, including Mahomes, a mysterious package. Using augmented reality features, the athletes went on a journey to unlock the package and reveal the final Kato design. You can check out videos of Mahomes’ reveal over on his Instagram story.
